REDMAGIC Astra 2 Gaming Tablet

Gaming has evolved drastically over the years to meet new demands and audiences. As a result, the world of gaming quickly spread across different devices, becoming more popular with smartphone and tablet users alike. As mobile gaming became a more portable, efficient, and easy way to game on the go, the dawn of dedicated gaming tablets soon came to pass.

Today, we’ll explore the history of gaming tablets and how REDMAGIC has always been part of their journey toward becoming a staple device for most gamers. Now, the tablet itself has been around for decades, with remnants found as early as 1963. And while the device became much more popular in the 2000’s, it was always understood by most as a more compact, sleek, and portable version of a PC. So, let’s see how tablets suddenly became part of the gamer’s arsenal.

How Tablets Were Optimized for Gaming

As tablets became widely used, the concept of pushing the device further for gaming came to fruition. With a wider screen, larger battery, and enhanced performance specs, the tablet became the obvious choice for manufacturers to create something that gamers could use. However, the traditional tablet simply couldn’t keep up with the demands.

Most tablets were designed for productivity, streaming, or browsing purposes, which would work for the average person but not for the average gamer. While the larger screens were helpful for some games, the tablets still struggled with more heavy gaming workloads, leading to performance throttling, overheating, average touch responses, and limited software.

Suddenly, despite the right hardware direction to start with, you couldn’t quite meet the finish line for tablet gaming. This pushed manufacturers to find a way to optimize tablets for gaming purposes. Mobile gaming took off around this time, with users no longer willing to compromise between portability and performance. Apart from the larger screen, what could make the tablet a beast in gaming? The key features of a proper gaming tablet soon became clear enough:

Improved Display: While the large screen is one of the obvious draws for tablets, a dedicated gaming tablet would need to keep up with intensive graphics demands, vibrant resolutions, and an evolving landscape of AAA games that show no sign of slowing down their visual flair.

Improved Responses: A formidable gaming tablet with up to 120Hz, 144Hz, or even 165Hz refresh rate and improved touch responses. This ensures smoother animations, reduced motion blur, and lower latency.

Powerful Processing: Gaming tablets use flagship-grade chipsets with powerful CPUs and GPUs capable of running graphically intensive games at high settings. This provides higher frame rates, better multitasking, and stability.

Cooling Systems: One of the keyways a gaming device stands out is its cooling capabilities. Unlike regular tablets, gaming tablets would need advanced cooling systems to dissipate heat and ensure peak performance without throttling.

Larger Battery: Gaming consumes significant power, so gaming tablets would typically need batteries around 8,000mAh to keep up.

While many brands tried to optimize the tablet for gaming, most renditions ultimately fell flat. Then, we took a crack at it and found a new way to bring superior gameplay to our fans.

Nova Takes Flight

In 2024, just a few years after REDMAGIC made its mark on the gaming industry with the world’s first gaming smartphone with a cooling system, we turned to the tablet and found a way to make it better. Thus, the REDMAGIC Nova Gaming Tablet was born. Designed to be a hybrid between a gaming smartphone and a laptop, the Nova quickly took off across the industry for its fast-paced performance and processing, redefining gaming excellence.

As the world’s first transparently designed tablet, the Nova was already turning heads. Inside, a powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Leading Version chipset pushed performance to the limit while the 10.9-inch 2.8K screen dazzled fans with a 144Hz refresh rate, seamless graphics, and immersive visuals.

As a dedicated gaming device, the Nova also came with an advanced 9-layer cooling system, sporting a 20,000 RPM internal fan, a 3D heat pipe, and a 3D internal circulation air duct, ensuring effortless heat dissipation.

The tablet also housed a massive 10,100mAh battery for up to 18 hours of uninterrupted gaming. The iconic REDMAGIC gaming tablet debut received praise from customers, media outlets, and influencer partners alike, with features in top publications like GSM Arena, Digital Trends, TechRadar, Android Police, PCMag, and Forbes.

According to Iyaz Akhtar from PC Mag, the Nova tablet is a “purpose-built Android gaming tablet that ticks nearly all the boxes with the right hardware for smooth gameplay and software tools to enhance the experience.” However, the Nova was far from the end for REDMAGIC gaming tablets.

The Astra 1 Landing

Once we set our sights on the stars, we quickly found our groove when it came to providing unique and superior gaming tablets to our fans. In 2025, we launched the REDMAGIC Astra Gaming Tablet, which featured a more powerful chipset, a higher-resolution OLED display, a larger storage option, and an upgraded cooling system — all in a more compact form factor.

Now at a sleeker 9.06 inches, the Astra offered the perfect balance between portability and performance. With the Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset under the hood, further boosted by the REDMAGIC RedCore R3 Pro gaming chip, the Astra gaming tablet quickly took center stage.

Built with a high-resolution 2.4K OLED screen and a 165Hz refresh rate, the Astra took gaming to new levels, superseding the Nova’s already impressive performance. The Astra’s 8,200mAh battery is also the largest of any tablet in the 9-inch class or smaller.

The Astra also boasted its enhanced 13-layered ICE-X cooling system that sported the industry’s first dual-layer vapor chamber and Liquid Metal 2.0, which was commonly found in high-end gaming laptops and PCs. The Astra demonstrated that a gaming tablet isn't just about processor speeds, but that every component contributes to the overall experience. The improved thermal management allowed longer gaming sessions without noticeable drops in frame rate, while display enhancements delivered smoother motion, more vibrant colors, and faster touch response.

At the same time, our Game Space ecosystem continued to evolve, giving users greater control over performance modes, notifications, recording tools, and system optimization. The result was a gaming tablet that felt polished in every way. So, where to go next but further up?

Unlock the Astra 2

Back to the present, we’re enormously excited to introduce the world to the next level of gaming tablet ingenuity: the REDMAGIC Astra 2 Gaming Tablet. So, how have we upped the game now? Well, without giving away too much of the surprise, we can simply attest to the enhanced speed and power you can look forward to.

The Astra 2 sports the latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processing, alongside our RedCore R4 gaming chip to ensure the most powerful Android tablet performance yet. The tablet also comes fitted with an 8,300mAh battery and 75W fast charging to keep you gaming for longer.

Moreover, the 9.06-inch vibrant 2.4K screen and fluid 185Hz OLED display, with up to 1600 nits, are easily set to create a new benchmark for tablet refresh rates. To keep up with the flaming performance, the Astra 2 is also the first tablet with visible liquid cooling, Liquid Metal 3.0, and a large VC vapor chamber for efficient cooling and uninterrupted gaming.
