REDMAGIC’s History of Cool: How Cooling Systems Became a Flagship Battleground

In today’s tech landscape, smartphone performance has reached a fascinating turning point. With so many upgrades and advanced features, the modern flagship phone can now easily run demanding games, render detailed environments, and deliver increasingly sophisticated graphics. However, as processors become more powerful, heat has become a much harder challenge to ignore.

Heat is a normal part of high-performance tech and has been since the start. This is why most PCs and devices come fitted with dedicated cooling systems to keep systems from overheating. For mobile gamers, heat is simply a by-product of superior performance; however, it can have tangible effects on sustained performance without the proper cooling in place.

Today, we’ll be looking at how cooling has shaped the way innovative gaming devices are designed, allowing this one feature to quickly become a leading trait of a top-tier flagship. We’ll also be looking at how cooling has always been a priority at REDMAGIC, especially with the highly anticipated 12 Pro about to launch soon. From pioneering built-in smartphone fans to pioneering liquid-cooling technology, our approach has evolved alongside the demands of mobile gaming. For now, let’s focus on why cooling holds such a prominent place in flagship features.

Why Is Cooling Becoming a Flagship Priority?

Every device generates heat when it’s pushed to work hard. For gaming smartphones, the workload is always much heavier, requiring simultaneous and sustained effort from the processor, graphics hardware, memory, and other components. Modern mobile games demand high frame rates, detailed graphics, complex physics, and online connectivity, which is a lot to ask from a compact device.

Now, add in the accumulated heat from all these workloads, and things get real hot, real fast. When the internal temperatures rise, smartphones also automatically use thermal throttling to protect their components by reducing processor speeds or adjusting power consumption, which naturally affects performance and can lead to lag.

For gamers, this is not an ideal situation to be in, especially when a second of lag could be the difference between a win and a loss. With thermal throttling in play, frame rates may become less consistent, responsiveness can change, and a device may struggle to maintain the same performance throughout a lengthy session. This is where cooling systems step in to take the heat, quite literally.

At its core, cooling is about more than just lower temperatures in a benchmark test; it’s about managing heat so that powerful hardware can deliver a more consistent experience over time. This is why cooling has become a critical element for flagship gaming devices in today’s market. You could sport the latest chipsets and lightning-fast processing power, but without adequate cooling, you’re still heading for a stuttering screen and burning fingertips.

This is also the reason why REDMAGIC has always made cooling technology a pivotal part of our design and engineering. From the beginning, we’ve always gone the extra mile to create gaming devices that prioritize sustained performance, because we understand that the gaming experience is about you, not just the latest specs.

The Evolution of REDMAGIC’s Cooling Fans

At REDMAGIC, cooling has always been important. Since 2018, we have been set on breaking boundaries and pushing the limits of innovation. This is how we introduced the world to the first-ever internal smartphone turbo fan, and how we’re still surprising our fans with our pioneering liquid cooling systems today. As gaming demands grow, the cooling systems we create must evolve to keep pace. So, let’s take a trip down memory lane and see how our cooling journey has progressed so far.

2018: The Passive Cooling Beginnings
Our journey with thermal management technologies began in 2018 with a more passive approach to cooling. This mainly involved graphite materials, airflow considerations, and structural design. With passive cooling, heat is transferred away from hot components and spread across a larger area, allowing it to dissipate naturally.

This is one of the most common cooling techniques used and still has its uses in modern cooling systems today. For the smartphone, it was the best choice because it didn’t need much to operate. However, passive cooling alone cannot handle substantial heat over extended periods. For gaming smartphones designed around sustained performance, this presented an opportunity to explore more active solutions.

2019: Bringing an Internal Fan to Smartphones
In 2019, we introduced a built-in centrifugal 14,000 RPM turbofan in the REDMAGIC 3 series, marking a major step in the evolution of smartphone cooling. Instead of relying exclusively on passive heat dissipation, our new flagship phone could actively move air through its internal cooling structure. The principle was straightforward: the airflow would carry heat away from the internal components, allowing it to escape more effectively.

This was a pioneering step for managing heat inside a compact device. After all, integrating a fan into a smartphone also introduced engineering challenges around size, power consumption, noise, durability, airflow paths, and the relationship with the phone's overall structure. Our innovative approach established active cooling as a defining element of flagship gaming hardware, offering a new understanding that performance engineering should extend beyond the chipset itself.

2021–2023: Building a More Complete Cooling System
As mobile games and processors continued to develop, our REDMAGIC range expanded its cooling architecture beyond the fan alone. The 6 series introduced vapor-chamber cooling, spreading heat across a larger surface area and reducing the build-up around individual components. This replaced earlier heat-pipe approaches. By the time we launched the 9 series, we had already combined a large vapor chamber with a fan capable of reaching 22,000 RPM.

There was now a more detailed and comprehensive shift in thermal engineering for gaming smartphones. While a fan can move the hot air, heat can remain concentrated around the processor. So, add in a vapor chamber to distribute that heat while the active airflow supports its removal. Now, the two technologies work together as parts of a coordinated system.

2024–2026: Introducing Advanced Materials and Liquid Cooling
Our cooling systems then turned to composite liquid metal with the 10 series. Here, liquid-metal-based thermal materials would be carefully engineered to transfer heat efficiently between components and cooling structures, focusing specifically on material compatibility and electrical conductivity. The next major milestone arrived with the REDMAGIC 11 Pro and its ground-breaking AquaCore Cooling System.

The world’s first mass-produced smartphone to use flowing liquid cooling was an effortless headline-stealer. The 11 Pro uses fluorinated liquid cooling alongside Liquid Metal 3.0, a large 3D vapor chamber, and a high-speed turbo fan. Rather than relying on a single cooling method, it combines multiple technologies to address different stages of heat management.

Today, the new REDMAGIC 12 Pro is also set to break records and push boundaries as the first mass-produced smartphone with a dual-loop system, combining an upgraded turbo fan, vapor chamber, and Liquid Metal 4.0. At REDMAGIC, our cooling evolution from passive cooling to active airflow and then to integrated liquid cooling has shown how we continue to rethink what’s possible and how we can make gaming better for you.

Does the Fan Still Matter in the Age of Liquid Cooling?

Now, when you look at the cooling progress we’ve made, you might think that the fan is simply a relic of an older system when you have pioneering liquid cooling to contend with. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Liquid cooling and active airflow address different parts of the same challenge.

While a liquid-based system can transport heat away from its source, it still needs a fan to move air through the cooling assembly to dissipate that heat. Without an effective way to release that accumulated heat, simply moving it somewhere else inside the phone is only part of the solution. A fan also allows the device to actively manage airflow rather than depending entirely on natural convection.

For effective cooling, the best approach considers the fan, vapor chamber, thermal materials, liquid-cooling components, and internal layout as parts of one coordinated system. This is why the fan remains an integral cooling component at REDMAGIC.

The Next Chapter of Cooling Innovation

The next generation of mobile performance brings a new set of thermal challenges. As flagship chipsets become more capable and mobile games continue to push graphical boundaries, cooling must evolve alongside them. So, if you can't handle the heat, it’s best to let REDMAGIC take the lead.

Building on a legacy that spans multiple devices, years, and cooling components and design, we’ve established ourselves as a leading force in pioneering cooling systems for mobile gaming devices. At the end of the day, cooling has changed the standards we have for flagship performance. Rather than looking at processing specs alone, we’ve learned to look at the whole system and how it's designed for sustained performance in the long run.

As the 12 Pro release approaches, one thing is clear: the future of mobile gaming will not be defined by processing power alone; it will also depend on how intelligently that power is managed. So, are you ready to embrace the next generation of cooling that defines flagship performance?
