The design element is often overlooked as a merely superficial spec when it comes to technology. While we look for the fastest performance, biggest battery, and most advanced features, we tend to glaze over design as a major component in the process. Fortunately, at REDMAGIC, we always place emphasis on every element when it comes to developing world-class gaming devices. In this blog article, we look at our history of design choices and how they’ve evolved to create a comprehensive gaming experience that won’t compromise excellence at any step.
When REDMAGIC just started in 2018, the designs that were tabled were mostly centered around being edgy, gamer-centric, and bright. However, we’ve always relied on superior craftsmanship to build phones that were increasingly durable, resilient, and ergonomic as the years went by. This process bears testament to our commitment to improving and evolving with growing demands. To get a better understanding of that growth, let’s take a stroll down memory lane and see how we’ve elevated our designs throughout the years.
In the Beginning…
The first REDMAGIC phone and the REDMAGIC Mars were the first devices we put out. While they broke records as the world’s first gaming smartphone with a cooling system and the world’s first gaming smartphone with shoulder triggers, respectively, they also featured similar designs.

Apart from the bright red exteriors, both phones also featured a glass Dinorex T2X-1 front, an aluminum back, and an aluminum frame with an RGB lighting panel in the back. The only major difference in design was that the Mars weighed 193g, while the first REDMAGIC phone stayed around a lighter 185g.
REDMAGIC 3 Series
Moving forward by a year, the REDMAGIC 3 and 3S were launched and were hailed as the industry’s first gaming phones with an active built-in cooling fan and liquid cooling. In terms of design, the 3 Series maintained the brighter, more colorful exterior of our earlier releases. Both the 3 and 3S weighed around 215g and were built with a Gorilla Glass 4 front, an aluminum back, and an aluminum frame.

REDMAGIC 5 Series
The 5 Series, consisting of the 5G and 5S phones, was then launched in 2020 and became the world’s first gaming smartphone set with a 144Hz refresh rate. The 5G phone also came in a unique Hot Rod Red color and weighed around 218g – the 5S came in a little heavier at around 220g. The device was crafted with a Gorilla Glass front, a Gorilla Glass back, and an aluminum frame.

REDMAGIC 6 Series
In the next year, the 6th generation of REDMAGIC phones was revealed and took their place as the world’s first gaming smartphones with a 165Hz refresh rate mobile display. Both the REDMAGIC 6 and 6 Pro weighed around 220g and came fitted with a metal aluminum center frame and a glass front and back cover. The 6S Pro was also our first phone with a half-transparent back panel, a feature that pushed us more towards transparent designs for later models.

REDMAGIC 7 Series
Named the world’s first gaming smartphone with UDC technology and a true full-screen display, the 7 Series debuted in 2022. In the 7 Pro, we chose to design the display without a camera notch taking up valuable screen space, ensuring a seamless display.

We then took the transparent plating idea from our previous series and decided to make both sides of the 7 Series transparent as well. This allowed users to see components inside the phone, including the turbo fan with RGB lights. The REDMAGIC 7 also had a unique Pulsar design with an eye-catching blue and purple color palette.
REDMAGIC 8 Series
In 2023, we stepped up the design game with the 8 Series, using a more refined appearance with sharp lines and clean edges for a fully futuristic look and feel. The 8S Pro used cyberpunk designs and a combination of reflective and transparent materials to create a fresh new look for the device.

In the Void and Titanium versions of REDMAGIC 8 Pro, we pushed for a more sci-fi-looking and fully transparent design. This was further enhanced by the layers created by a deeper air duct, a transparent speaker, and an antenna bracket on full display under the clear back cover.
REDMAGIC 9 Series
Soon after, the 9 Series was launched and featured a super-futuristic UI design that seamlessly integrated transparency, metal, geometry, and light. While the notch-less display that was first seen in our 7 Series, for the 9 Series, we decided to pair it with a seamless glass panel that makes the device just as smooth in the back as it is in the front.

This generation also marked the introduction of the industry’s first two-in-one lens and back cover. We managed to fit all the components that would usually protrude out of the back of the phone under a solid glass panel by making the glass function as both the protective layer for the device and the lens for the improved camera in the REDMAGIC 9 Pro.
Each component in the 9 Pro was also stacked flush and perfectly fit into the ultra-thin 8.9mm frame of the device without the slightest protrusion for a truly seamless design that’s easier and more comfortable to hold while gaming. The 9 Pro also takes the aesthetic a step further with customizable RGB lights along the side of the device.
REDMAGIC Tablets
Taking a break from the gaming smartphones, let’s focus on the design journey of the REDMAGIC tablet range. Around 2024, we released the REDMAGIC Nova Gaming Tablet, which took the world by storm as the first transparent gaming tablet around. The Nova kept its fan, processing chip, camera, and cooling components all on display for a more futuristic look. However, the lightweight all-metal design also served a practical purpose and drastically improved heat dissipation.
The Nova also featured a 10.9-inch LCD screen for immersive visuals, while its aviation aluminum metal back cover resists scratches and fingerprints. The frame also features a 45° anti-slip chamfer and offers unparalleled durability, ensuring a long-lasting and robust gaming experience.

This year, the REDMAGIC Astra Gaming Tablet was released as the ultimate portable powerhouse. While the Astra was built to be more premium by design, it also sports the same transparent overlay and RGB additions of the Nova, only now neatly packaged in a more compact flat 9.06-inch body with comfortable rounded corners and a vibrant OLED display.
REDMAGIC 10 Series
Back to our gaming smartphones, the 10th Series brought about significant design improvements that focused heavily on endurance, comfort, and practicality. Our REDMAGIC 10 Pro boasts a seamless rear design with a flat, ultra-protective glass and zero camera bump. Using an aviation aluminum middle frame and double-sided glass

The 10 Pro also flaunts a flat back design with a smooth, bump-free surface that’s comfortable to hold. At a slim 8.9mm and a 229g weight, the device remains surprisingly portable despite housing a 7050mAh battery and advanced cooling systems. This is largely due to the use of cutting-edge materials like silicon-carbon battery technology and lightweight composites.
Later on, the REDMAGIC 10 Air was released as the more compact, lighter, and affordable option on our roster. Weighing just 205g with an ultra-thin 7.85mm matte metal body, the 10 Air quickly became the more practical and lightweight option in the 10 Series. Anti-glare glass etching with matte-gloss integration also gave the phone a classy look while ensuring fingerprint resistance. It also features customizable RGB lighting for calls, texts, charging, alarms, movie watching, and gaming.

While younger REDMAGIC fans are the primary target market for 10 Air, it also became the best option for anyone who might find our other gaming smartphones a bit too pricey for their current circumstances. Trusted Reviews noted that the 10 Air offers a lighter and more affordable alternative to REDMAGIC’s usual gaming behemoths, and that while the phone can't quite perform like its actively cooled siblings, it's still more than powerful enough to run the most demanding games.
We then took the design a step further and released the prestigious Limited Edition Golden Saga 10 Pro, which really amped up the design – both in terms of luxury and function. The Golden Saga made use of real precious metals in its design, featuring a silver alloy air duct, gold-plated VC heat dissipation fins, and a precision-cut, laser-engraved, and color-coated sapphire back cover.

However, all these premium materials served a practical purpose as well and drastically improved heat dissipation through their unique elemental qualities. The Golden Saga also uses the same lightweight and durable carbon fiber found in supercars to ensure that the gaming device is impervious to scratches and wear.
The REDMAGIC 10S Pro was then released and sported a premium transparent metal body with an ergonomic flat-back design, dynamic RGB lighting, strategically placed shoulder triggers for immersive gameplay, and a customizable Magic Key for instant access to Game Space and everyday functions. The 10S Pro uses an aviation aluminum middle frame and double-sided glass to strike a balance between stylish and durable.

REDMAGIC 11 Pro
Now, we have the great honor of introducing the world to our latest flagship device: the REDMAGIC 11 Pro. One of the more exciting design features of the 11 Pro is undoubtedly the debut of our new transparent design and signature AquaCore that allows you to see the intricate internal components of our innovative liquid cooling system. With the Nightfreeze and Subzero models, you can watch the liquid flow through the back of the phone to dissipate heat.

Built to go further, the 11 Pro is crafted with a premium aluminum alloy frame and durable Corning® Gorilla glass for maximum protection, durability, and comfort. It also comes with an IPX8 dust and water resistance rating for versatile usage.
The phone comes in three different color variations with a matte or gloss finish to suit your aesthetic, and each features a unique rear RGB frame strip to maintain a gamer vibe. With a sleek flatback and no camera bump in sight, the device is comfortable and easy to hold, especially during long gaming sessions.
